Job Output: 

This position is responsible for the application of the sciences required to support technology, product,  process development which result in value driven contributions that meet/exceed customer needs, exp technology platforms, grow existing markets,  develop new products  markets. This position will primarily work on approved NPD (New Product Development) projects  is involved in all aspects of the new product development process, from concept development through to  including commercialization. This position routinely interacts with sales, marketing, product managers, NPD project management  technical resources, manufacturing leaders, vendors,  suppliers to deliver targeted objectives.


Essential Duties  Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Manage new product technical projects in the Feasibility or Development stage of the NPD Process in a way that meets cost, schedule  performance targets.
Completes Feasibility  Development studies in an accurate manner utilizing sound technical  data analysis principles.
Provides technical assistance relating to new product introductions. Plans, arranges,  conducts factory qualification tests  contributes to evaluation of results  subsequent recommendations.
Conducts /or supports manufacturing process qualification at vendor locations.
Develops testing methodology as required for the evaluation of new products.
Understs strengths & weaknesses of Armstrong product line vs. competition regarding performance  quality attributes. Works to mitigate product performance gaps by applying knowledge of product line to proactive improvement efforts.
Initiates investigations, identifies opportunities, recommends / approves alternate material substitutions  new chemestries in support of new products, quality improvement, performance enhancements, /or best cost.
Recommends  implements process changes necessary to optimize product results (cost, performance, or manufacturing effectiveness).
Actively works with customers, team members  management to determine approaches to problems, new business requirements  application of new concepts  technology.
Evaluates existing  new technologies for alignment with project plans, strategies  specific business requirements. Identifies technical factors that impact business strategy.
Takes initiative to achieve exposure to key customer groups in order to underst market drivers.
Works with corporate environmental  legal disciplines concerning issues relative to new product PSDR (product safety & design reviews).
Provides technical support to AFP-Asia manufacturing plants as required for approved new products or on-going operations.
Understs process limitations  process variation.
Understs  applies material  process knowledge to project work. Provides an in-depth knowledge of the behavior  performance of raw materials  product formulations.
When required, creates technician work assignments, provides guidance  follow-up.
Works with raw material or sourced product suppliers to insure Armstrongs performance criteria is achieved.
Proactively transfers technical knowledge to other key stakeholders as required by business need.
Manages risks to bring projects to closure.
Provides ongoing  effective communications of project activities to all key business stakeholders.
Networks with other global Scientists to insure best practice is shared.
Uses LEAN principles, where applicable, to improve the overall effectiveness of assigned activities.

Requirements: 

BS degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or other related technical field of study. 
5+ years of business experience. 
Proven experience in new product development, project implementation, laboratory,  manufacturing environments with a minimum of 2 years in a lead technical role(s). 
Go-to-Market, flooring manufacturing  LEAN experience desired.
